Ricardo Carvalho leaves the NT
One of the most shocking pieces of news to come out of the Portuguese football world, was not the various transfers, but in fact the surprising news of Ricardo Carvalho’s immediate decision to quit the Seleccão. The news was not one fans would expect to hear amidst transfer deadline day drama. But that is exactly what fans focused on. No one knew the full story, just that Carvalho walked...

The Sporting Lisbon Horror Show →
There’s nothing funny about the trouble that Sporting currently face, however, that hasn’t stopped some from putting an original spin on the current situation. This horror story is worth the read.
As time had slowly, and painfully passed, we are brought to the summer of 2010 where Frank-n-Furter’s heartless onslaught continued. He and Riff Raff had sold Miguel Veloso to Genoa and...

Life after Coentrao and Luiz →
A pretty good post about the fact that David Luiz and Fabio Coentrao are bound to leave in the summer. One player he forgot was Andre Carvalhas who is a left winger and who has been a part of the first team before. He’s 21 so not too young but young enough to sort of grow and learn and fully develop. Anyway a great article

Benfica Youth
The biggest names in Portuguese football are without a doubt the big three – Sporting, Benfica, and Porto. Those three are the ones who have won the most, as well as have produced the big name talent now playing around the world, names like Figo, Ronaldo, Quaresma, and Nani. Not just Portuguese players either, but as well as many other youth players that later on play at various clubs.
But there...

"We've improved game to game"
Benfica have continued with their pre-season having games on back to back days. The first starting with the opening of the Guimaraes tournament against FC Groningen. The game got off to a shaky start with a Groningen goal in the 4th minute. Alan Kardec however managed to level it in the 6th minute, scoring another very great goal and showing superb talent. Benfica had many opportunities and...

Pre-Season Wins on Presentation Day
Today would prove to be a day of celebration for one very young new member of the FC Porto team. James Rodriguez, who just celebrated his 19th birthday with the club back in Germany on the 12th, scored his first Porto goal during the pre-season meet up with Ajax today at the Dragão. With spped increasing down the wings for Porto, a goal was immeninet and it would come sooner rather than later. A...

Benfica pre-season 2010
Even though it has been a few weeks, I’d like to send out my best wishes to Angel Di Maria on his move to Real Madrid. I know he’ll do for them what he did for Benfica and I hope that he finds success there.
Pre-season has started for those not picked for the world cup, having had three pre-season matches already. New signings Franco Jara, Nicolas Gaitan, and Roberto Jimenez have...

"We want to be champions on Sunday"
Benfica saw their title hopes grow even bigger with a 2-3 win over Academica on Monday. Benfica took the lead with a 2nd minute goal from Weldon. Academica came back to score the equalizer through Diogo in the 28th minute. Benfica would take a small lead just before halftime with another Weldon goal in the 41st minute, allowing them to come back into the second half with the confidence. There...

Lisboa derby
Monday saw the always explosive derby between Benfica and cross-town rivals, Sporting. Sporting started off the better team, taking charge and making it hard on Benfica to really get something going in the first half. What seemed like a game that was going in Sporting’s direction would eventually crumble apart. The game itself was filled with a lot of petty tackles and far too many...

"our goal is to become champions"
Sorry for the lack of updates, my real life has taken control and I haven’t had much time to devote to the boys. So here is a quick recap of where we’ve been and what we’ve done and what to expect in the next few days. Two weeks ago this Sunday saw the boys play Sporting Braga, current holders of second place. Everyone played down the game, saying it was not the deciding factor....

“Toda a equipa vai dedicar-se ao máximo.”
With time running out, Porto has found their footing and seems to be back on the right path after a win last weekend against Marítimo at the Dragão on Saturday. With a very convincing win the weekend before Jesualdo Ferreira would keep the eleven who won a convincing victory in the visit to Belenenses in the previous round. Numbers of supporters in attendance for the clash would be an impressive...

Wrapping up a great week
This weekend capped off a great week for Benfica. Thursday saw them progress through into the quarter-final round of the Europa League after beating Marseille with a last gasp win. The first half seemed to tip in Benfica’s favor with most of the threats coming from them but it remained scoreless going into halftime. The second half saw many opportunities, including a few near misses from...

Europa + Liga Sagres
It has been a busy couple of weeks for the Eagles. Last Thursday saw the Europa league game between Benfica and Marseille. While the team played well, it wasn’t their best game of the season. They scored through Maxi Pereira yet conceded a 90th minute goal from Hatem Ben Arfa. This is good for Marseille having scored an away goal but this does not guarantee anything. With the next leg of the...

A toalha não será atirada ao chão.
It’s been half a week since the Dragons were together as a complete group, facing Sporting in their week 21 match up. The dragons despite coming off a good week last week would take a harsh tumble against the lions and would suffer a heartbreaking 3-0 defeat at the Alvalade on Sunday. Although the loss would further the gap between the current champions and Benfica and Braga ahead of them,...

To the Europa league and beyond
Last Tuesday saw the advancement of Benfica into the Europa League’s Round of 16. While the first leg seemed pretty open and allowed for both teams to go into the second leg with almost a clean slate, save for a vital away goal, Benfica made sure to keep anythin else from happening. They took clear control of the game from the start and never really allowed Hertha to get a good grip or...

Europa league, take 2
Thursday saw the round 32 Europa league match up between Benfica and Hertha Berlin at the Estadio da Luz. The match ended in a 1-1 draw, with a goal from Angel Di Maria for Benfica and an own goal from Javi Garcia, giving Hertha a boost going into the second leg. Both sides were equal, with the possession divided 50-50 and nearly identical shots on goal. Both were unlucky not to have scored more...

Together, always together, we are going to win...
It’s been a very interesting week for FC Porto who has experienced significant highs and significant lows since their last league match. The champions suffered a hard nil-nil draw at Leixões knocking them more off their path to their fifth title after falling 9 points behind leaders Benfica and 8 points behind Braga whom they faced this weekend. Porto did have something to celebrate about...

To the Beer Cup & Beyond!
Wednesday wasn’t your average day for FC Porto as they faced their Carlsberg Cup semi-final match against Academica at the Dragão. The match would not be a normal one for the Champions as Jesualdo Ferreira used the 4-4-2 model, that he rarely uses, and only would play three regulars, Bruno Alves, Alvaro Pereira, and Mariano. Coming into the match the Champions had the most to gain in a win...

Taca da Liga semi-final
Tuesday saw the semi-final of the Taca da Liga between Sporting and Benfica. It was a game full of controversial moments and big goals as Benfica won 4-1 sending them through to the final where they will face Porto. That game should also be one to watch with both teams playing well but also for the fact that it will be a Classico game. There will be more on that later on with both Jas and I...

Dreaming in 3's.
It was all about the number “3” last night at the Dragão as Porto closed out Naval 1º de Maio. The current national champions closed out a helpless Naval at home thanks to three strikes from Tomas Costa, Falcao, and Silvestre Varela. The win helps Porto secure their current spot in 3rd place as they hold off a sub-par Sporting by twelve points and the gain of three points put the...
